At Bjorklund Bros Fishing Co., every trip is about more than just time on the water. We believe that enjoying Idaho's rivers comes with a responsibility to help protect them. That's why our charter focuses on one species above all others—the invasive common carp.

Common carp were introduced to North America in the late 1800s and have since spread throughout many of the country's lakes, reservoirs, and river systems. While they may be a popular sport fish in other parts of the world, they have become one of the most disruptive invasive fish species in many Idaho waterways.

Unlike native fish, carp feed by rooting through the river bottom in search of food. As they do this, they stir up sediment that has settled naturally on the bottom. This seemingly simple behavior creates a chain reaction throughout the ecosystem.

Healthy rivers depend on clean water, stable riverbeds, and aquatic vegetation. Carp disrupt all three.

As they feed, carp uproot underwater plants that provide habitat and spawning areas for native fish, insects, amphibians, and waterfowl. Without these plants, many native species lose essential shelter and breeding grounds.

The sediment stirred into the water reduces clarity, making it difficult for sunlight to reach aquatic vegetation. Less sunlight means fewer healthy plants, which in turn leads to reduced oxygen production and poorer habitat throughout the ecosystem.

Cloudier water also makes it harder for many native fish to feed and reproduce successfully. Over time, high carp populations can contribute to declining water quality and less resilient river ecosystems.

One of the most effective tools for managing invasive carp populations is consistent harvest.

Removing carp reduces competition for food and habitat, lessens pressure on native vegetation, and helps slow the cycle of habitat degradation. While no single group can eliminate carp entirely, every fish removed represents one less invasive fish disturbing the river.

Bowfishing is a highly selective harvest method. Unlike many other fishing techniques, guides and clients can visually identify their target before taking a shot. This allows us to focus exclusively on invasive species while avoiding native fish.

Our commitment is simple:

Responsible conservation doesn't end when the fish leaves the water.

We're committed to finding sustainable uses for every carp we harvest whenever possible. Rather than allowing fish to go to waste, we work with local partners who can put them to good use.

Depending on availability and seasonal needs, harvested carp may be used for:

• Other approved conservation partnerships that support Idaho's natural resources.
